Grey Sentinel

Grey Sentinel sits between architecture and figure. Its pitched top reads at once as the roof of a small house and as a tilted head, while a round recessed opening on one side works as a single eye, giving the piece a clear character and a direction of gaze. The body has been hollowed out into a deep, shaded niche carried on two slender legs, so that despite its stone mass the sculpture keeps a certain lightness and lets light pass through it. The natural grey-and-white veining runs across the smooth faces independently of the cuts, creating a quiet tension between the strict precision of the form and the accidental drawing of the material.

Every piece is handmade — cut, shaped and sanded entirely by hand, with no serial production. Because the material is natural, the pattern of the veining, the shade of grey and the small variations in texture differ every time, which keeps each Grey Sentinel genuinely one of a kind. The sculpture works well on a console, a mantelpiece, a bookshelf or a desk, ideally where side light can bring out the recess and the shadow inside it. A dry or slightly damp cloth is all the care it needs.
