Aperture — Plate Sculpture

Aperture is a slender vertical construction assembled from flat intersecting plates set at right angles to one another. A tall opening, rounded at top and bottom, cuts through the centre of the mass, and inside it hangs a second narrow plate — so the piece reads as an interior held within an interior. The upper edge is cut on a diagonal and finished with a small sharp accent that breaks the regularity of the silhouette and gives it direction. Near the base the arch motif returns in miniature. Deep matte black removes any sense of material from the surface: the object works purely as silhouette and as a play of void against solid, and its appearance changes radically with the viewing angle — from an almost flat line to a full three-dimensional volume.

Every piece is handmade — the individual plates are cut, finished and assembled by hand, outside of serial production. Small variations in the edges and in the depth of the matte black are a natural quality of hand-working and make each Aperture unique. The sculpture reads best against a pale, plain background — on a console, a shelf, a mantelpiece or a desk. A dry cloth or a soft brush is all the care it needs.
