Bud — Form on a Raw Plinth

Bud is a small sculpture built on the contrast between two states of the same material. The upper mass is soft and organic: a full, rounded form with a single deep notch that curls it inward like a bud just before opening, or a wave caught at the moment it breaks. The surface is smooth, matte and faintly grained, carrying light gently from the pale crest down into the soft shadow of the hollow. Beneath it sits a plain cubic plinth left entirely raw — irregularly split faces and a pronounced stone texture. Setting a finished form on an unworked block tells a quiet story about how sculpture emerges from raw material.

Every piece is handmade — carved, shaped and sanded entirely by hand, outside of serial production. The plinth is split by hand, so its edges, texture and play of light and shadow never repeat, which keeps each Bud one of a kind. The sculpture works well on a console, a bookshelf, a desk or in an alcove, ideally in side light that brings out the notch and the difference between the two textures. A dry or slightly damp cloth is all the care it needs.
