Unfurling — Series of Five Forms

Unfurling is a series of five marble objects that record a single movement broken into successive stages. The first form is tightly rolled, almost closed in on itself; each following piece opens a little further — the edges drop, the interior grows wider and shallower — until the last unfolds into an almost flat oval plane. Read together the sequence suggests a leaf or a petal caught in five moments, reduced to the pure geometry of soft curves. White marble with fine grey veining reinforces the rhythm: every fold produces a different shadow, and the smooth, silken surface moves fluidly from light into half-shade. The objects work as a complete set arranged in a line and equally well on their own — each one holds its ground alone.

Every piece is handmade — carved, hollowed and sanded entirely by hand, outside of serial production. Marble is a natural material, so the drawing of the veins, the tone of the white and the small differences in curvature never repeat, which keeps every set one of a kind. The forms are functional as well as sculptural, serving as bowls for fruit, small objects or keys. They look best against a dark background that brings out their pale silhouettes. A dry or slightly damp cloth is all the care they need.
