Portal — Double Arch

Portal is a sculpture built from two concentric arches set one inside the other and offset in depth. The smaller arch nests within the larger, and each rests on its own semicircular base, creating two levels and a strong drawing perspective — the eye passes automatically through the first opening towards the second, and on into empty space. Narrow flat profiles of constant width keep the form light and graphic despite the mass of the metal. The satin brushed steel gives no sharp mirror but soft, silken reflections that travel along the arches as the light and the viewer's position change. Seen from the side, the object narrows almost to a single line.

Every piece is handmade — bent, welded, brushed and finished entirely by hand, outside of serial production. The direction of the brushing, the distribution of the reflections and small variations in the radii of the arches never repeat, which makes each Portal unique. The sculpture works well on a console, a mantelpiece, a desk or a bookshelf, ideally against a darker, plain background. A soft dry cloth wiped along the direction of the brushing is all the care it needs.
